Women’s Health: Make Your Health a Priority
Women often spend much of their lives caring for others—children, partners, relatives, patients, and communities. However, caring for yourself is just as important. Regular health checks, early attention to symptoms, and healthy daily habits can prevent illness and help you enjoy a longer, healthier life.
Know Your Numbers High blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol often develop without obvious symptoms. Women should periodically check their:
Blood pressure
Blood glucose or HbA1c
Cholesterol levels
Weight and waist circumference
These conditions increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, and other serious complications. Cardiovascular disease is sometimes viewed mainly as a men’s health problem, but it is actually a leading cause of illness and death among women worldwide. Do Not Ignore Changes in Your Body Consult your doctor if you experience:
A new breast lump, nipple discharge, or changes in the skin of the breast
Abnormal vaginal bleeding, particularly after menopause
Very heavy, painful, or irregular periods
Persistent pelvic or abdominal pain
Pain during sexual intercourse
Unusual vaginal discharge, itching, or odor
Persistent bloating or an unexplained change in bowel habits
Unexplained weight loss, severe fatigue, or weakness
While these symptoms do not always indicate a serious illness, they should always be properly evaluated.
Keep Up With Cancer Screenings Cervical cancer is largely preventable through HPV vaccination, routine cervical screening, and timely treatment of precancerous changes. Women should discuss Pap smears, HPV testing, and appropriate screening intervals with their healthcare provider. Even women who have received the HPV vaccine still require cervical screening.
Breast health is equally important. Become familiar with the normal appearance and feel of your breasts and report any unusual changes promptly. Depending on your age, medical history, and family history, your doctor may recommend a clinical breast examination, mammogram, or additional imaging.
Early detection significantly improves treatment outcomes for many cancers. Screening recommendations should always be individualized based on age, symptoms, and personal risk factors. WHO cancer guidance supports vaccination, appropriate screening, and early evaluation of suspicious symptoms.
Protect Your Reproductive and Sexual Health Women should feel comfortable discussing contraception, fertility, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), menstrual concerns, and menopause with their doctor. Sexual and reproductive healthcare should always be respectful, confidential, and free from judgment.
If you are sexually active, speak with your healthcare provider about STI testing and the contraceptive method most suitable for you. If you are planning a pregnancy, a preconception visit can help identify potential health concerns, review current medications, and start folic acid supplementation before conception.
Remember Your Mental Health Emotional well-being is an essential part of overall health. Persistent sadness, anxiety, irritability, exhaustion, poor sleep, or feeling overwhelmed should not simply be dismissed as "stress."
Women frequently experience mental health challenges during pregnancy, after childbirth, while caring for family members, or during menopause. Seeking help is never a sign of weakness; it is an essential act of self-care.
Healthy Habits Matter You can support your long-term health by:
Eating a balanced diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and lean proteins
Limiting excess salt, sugar, and highly processed foods
Remaining physically active
Getting adequate sleep
Avoiding smoking
Limiting alcohol consumption
Taking prescribed medications consistently
Making time for relaxation and emotional well-being
Small, sustainable improvements can make a meaningful, lasting difference.
